The great tunnel move has begun! We are rotating some of our “easier to move” tunnels to a new field to prepare for our ginger and turmeric crops ready to be planted soon. We are excited to have a new field with higher fertility for these heavy feeding crops. It would have been nice to do it in the fall or even the winter but sometimes farmer’s just need a break. Getting to it now and will be ready in a week or two. Last week we welcomed two new farmers to our crew. Welcome Anthony and Alaina who jumped right into our field projects. After orientation we got into the burning old last seasons crop to prepare for new growth. Excited this will be our first big harvest since we moved to the farm and started these perennial crops. Rhubarb is coming in nicely and we got some more division to plant where we had holes.

At the end of the week we traveled to the pa Herb and Garden Expo where Eli presented on 5 easy to grow herbs and we got to talk to new customers. Thanks for visiting and your questions.

As many of you may know, we are nearing the Chinese Lunar New Year. Wendy, our Special Orders and Shipping Extraordinaire grew up in Hong Kong and I wanted to highlight her experience with this special holiday.

This year’s Chinese New Year’s Day will fall on January 29. Year of the Snake! That is according to the Chinese traditional calendar (our lunisolar calendar).

When I was a kid, Chinese New Year was celebrated not just on New Year’s Day, but way before that.

We had to thank the Kitchen God on the 23rd day of the 12th month and bribe him with sweets and sugarcane, clean our house and cleanse ourselves in a bath with pomelo leaves on the 28th day, sell our laziness to others (so we’ll be diligent students) until the 30th day. In the evening the very important New Year’s Eve dinner would be eaten with our family.

On New Year’s Day, new clothes are usually worn. The house would be decorated with fai chun—auspicious wishes written on red sheets of paper. Vases of flowers, for example peach blossoms—these are more like small trees; kind of the same idea of Christmas trees but with no leaves and just blooms, gladioli and chrysanthemums… my favorite is narcissus with fragrant blooms. A lot of decorations are in red—the auspicious color in Chinese culture.

Children and people who are not married would get lai see—red packets with money inside from married people. (One of the reasons why I try not to visit Hong Kong during this time. Ahem…)

Turnip cakes, taro cakes—these are not exactly cakes but savory puddings to be sliced and fried—are in abundance. Sweet puddings like water chestnut cakes and the mochi-like coconut milk new year cakes are yummy. A lovely array of sweets and candied fruits (candied coconut, candied lotus seeds….etc), all sorts of melon seeds are on display in a beautiful lacquered box.

🌱First sprouts of 2025, welcome to our baby ranunculus! Getting this crop started has been a journey of patience, innovation and hope.

In the early days of farming we would end the season after the killing frost and once field clean up had been done. As we have been growing, experimenting and adapting we have added a few crops into our schedule which has us tending some crops over winter. The first being ranunculus. Typically we sprout these and get them planted in the fall but things got set of schedule with an ankle injury and then full speed ahead into our winter market preparations. That meant our ranunculus didn’t get planted and instead we have been babysitting them indoors until we have a tunnel prepared for them. Since it has been so darn cold, I decided to convert our cooler into a perfect growing chamber since it has insulation. With a small heater and some grow lights we are staying on schedule to have ranunculus for early spring.

🫚Next crop of the winter will be ginger and turmeric. I’m planning to fire up the greenhouse in a few weeks and sow cool season seeds for early spring planting. We have to make some adjustment this week so we only need to heat 1/4 of the house. I’m sure everyone is feeling their heat bills rising and it’s all about finding ways to be more efficient when we can. Stay warm folks!

Tam is pictured in this photo with a cool club of turmeric. We wish her well in her next adventure as she is moving on from Team Farmacy. She started in 2017 as an intern and wore many hats on the farm as she continued to grow with us over the years. She was our Products and Production Team Lead and kept great stories coming on our social media.

We will be sharing employment opportunities in the near future. We are always looking for great people to join us in what we do.

❄️Solstice greetings from our snow covered farm ❄️We had a magical wedding ceremony in the event barn today and even got to process dried flowers in place of traditional rose petals. It was full circle to turn these flowers into confetti and celebrate the beauty at each stage of a flowers life cycle. Once a fresh flower in a bouquet, then dried and pressed into everlasting creations and now processed into flower confetti. All the memories, textures and colors tossed into the air so light and passing. We are grateful for this long night and the coming of light ✨

In the fall of 2009, two budding farmers were on the hunt for land to start an organic farm. With several hundred pounds of heirloom garlic seed ready for planting, only one challenge remained; finding certified organic or chemical free land…in Lancaster county. (No easy feat!) After many cold calls and countless hours of networking and exploring, 1 acre of precious land was secured through a lease. It was that very same fall that Eli Weaver and Casey Spacht broke ground, planting Lancaster Farmacy’s first crop of garlic. Planted along with those first cloves were the dreams and vision of bringing an organic medicinal herb farm to life.

Fast forward 15 years, to November 2024. Just last week, the Lancaster Farmacy field crew finished planting cloves for the 2025 growing season. Though our garlic crop has waxed and waned with the needs and goals of the farm each year, it’s one of those foundational crops that we plant every season. It has been a wild ride, watching our farm grow from small beginnings into what it is today. We were once like a small clove of garlic, that has now multiplied, and grown into a flourishing bulb!

In celebration of Lancaster Farmacy’s 15 year anniversary, we are offering part of our seed stock for sale! This year, we are offering 2lb bags of organic, heirloom seed garlic for $10-$15. (Typically, organic garlic seed sells for $17-$25/lb!) With this deep discount, we hope to share our love of garlic with the community, and continue the legacy of Lancaster Farmacy. Garlic seed can be saved, shared, and passed on to the next generation for years to come. That’s the beauty of heirloom seed!

Thanks to the arrival of frost, the farm crew has switched gears! From now on, harvest focus is on root crops, all destined for the drying room.

Our root crops look a little different than your typical haul of carrots, beets, and potatoes. On an herb farm, we get to harvest allies like ginger, ashwagandha, and echinacea roots.

Did you know it takes Echinacea purpurea root 3 years to reach maturity? That's how many seasons our echinacea needs to stay in the ground before we can dig the root. Until then, the bright pink/ purple flowers are a great host for pollinators 🐝

Tomorrow, we welcome the arrival of the autumnal equinox 🍂

Equinox can be best understood by breaking down the elements of its name in latin. "Aequus" means even or equal, and "nox" the word for night. Befitting, as the equinox dates on the calendar denote when the length of daylight is equal to that of nighttime. Equinox, or Mabon, also serves to mark the transition from one season to another, in this case, summer to fall.

It is a transitional time, as we wave goodbye to summer and turn to greet the colder days ahead. It's a wonderful opportunity to take inventory of the past season, acknowledge how we've grown, how we'd like to continue growing, and to give thanks for it all. One traditional way of celebrating equinox is by kindling a flame, whether it be for a bonfire, or a candle.

Light the way into darker days with keepers of the flame from @elswickgoods. A diverse selection of these hand-crafted candles is always available at our farm store, now open Saturdays from 10am-3pm. 🕯🐝🍂
